Human Rights Institution of Turkey conducted visits to İstanbul and Edirne on 18-19 September 2015, in order to interview and identify the need and problems of refugees who are waiting partly in İstanbul Esenler Terminal and partly in various sections of Edirne and trying to cross over to Europe. Along with Board Members of Human Rights Institution of Turkey Gülden Sönmez, Abdurrahman Eren and Nihat Bulut as well as assistant experts of the Institution, representatives from Helsinki Citizens' Assembly, International Refugee Rights Association and Human Resource Development Foundation have attended the visit.
During the visit to İstanbul Esenler Terminal on 18 September 2015, initial interviews were conducted with representatives of Human Resource Development Foundation and then a field visit was conducted to interview with refugees individually. In addition to providing information about tasks and duties of the Human Rights Institution of Turkey to individuals and groups, their problems and demands were also noted. Field staff of the Directorate General of Migration Management was also interviewed about the needs of the people in the field as well as services provided for them in addition to the activities of the Directorate General of Migration Management.
After the representative of the Directorate General of Migration Management, Bayrampaşa District Governor Osman Aslan Canbaba and İstanbul Deputy Governor Nuri Gezici were interviewed.
Observations regarding the Esenler Terminal were as follows:
In Edirne on 19 September 2015, interviews with refugees and authorities were conducted in three locations (Otoban-highway side, Sarayiçi and Antik Park). After having general information about the situation from Police administration interviews were conducted with leaders of refugees and groups and individuals waiting alongside the highway. Following these interviews, refugees located in Antik Park which was at the center of Edirne and refugees who have been waiting near the highway but convinced to move over to Sarayiçi by the local administration, Deputy Governor of Edirne, Local Administrators and representatives of civil society organizations were also interviewed.
