On 25 February 2015, an introduction and information meeting was held with the participation of Ben BUCKLAND, Advisor on National Human Rights Institutions at the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) based in Geneva and Eva CSERGÖ, APT’s Europe and Central Asia Programme Officer and the experts of the Turkish Human Rights Institution.
In this one-day meeting moderated by Dr. Hikmet TÜLEN, President of HRI of Turkey, the experts from HRI of Turkey delivered short presentations titled “Organizational Law of the Institution”, “Activities Carried out Under the National Prevention Mechanism in the Context of The Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture (OPCAT)” and “Legislative Amendment Activities” that were already on-going. They were followed by the presentations delivered by the representatives of the Association and titled “History and Activities of APT”, “Preventive Approach in Combating Torture”, “OPCAT and Criteria for its Implementation”, “National Human Rights Institutions as a National Prevention Mechanism”.
In particular, questions related to OPCAT and visits to the detention places and reporting as well as the role of National Human Rights Institutions as a National Preventive Mechanism were discussed mutually in this interactive meeting.
In addition to the information exchange, participants also exchanged their ideas about further collaborative projects in the forthcoming period.
